HP has been proving for many years that they are one of the most innovative companies when it comes to printing technologies and specifically mass-produced consumer based products. One of their most popular lines is the humble HP DeskJet printer, but just how did it come into eistxence?

Years of Research & Development

One of the reasons for their success is the long line of HP printers that have come out in the past have been extremely successful and has helped to grow the company to the point where they are one of the most respected brands for consumer printing products. One of the things that have helped the company gain this reputation is the great success that it has had with its line of DeskJet printers and high quality DeskJet ink. This all started a long time ago: in fact it was back in 1979 when the thermal HP inkjet technology was invented that would eventually lead to the development of the extremely successful HP DeskJet Printers.

Introducing the First DeskJet

The company, after inventing the thermal inkjet technology, would go on to produce many successful printers in the years to come. However it wasn’t until 1988 that the first HP DeskJet printer was created. This was a huge milestone for the company and marked the first printer that would be able to offer laser quality on plain paper. This was a huge success for the company and would be the start of the great success they would experience with HP DeskJet printers in the future.

Success Begat Success

Due to the success of the first DeskJet the company would not take long to release the next generation. In 1989 the DeskJet+ was introduced to the public and furthered the reputation of these great products. The company would spend the next few years further developing and refining the technology, introducing many firsts in the quality of printing that consumers had access to.

By the time 1994 hit the line of DeskJet Printers were much more advanced than they were originally and as the past few years seen innovations that would drastically increase the quality of these printers and most importantly the quality of the printed images. The main reason for this was because the company was able to expand printing capabilities to 600 x 300 dpi resolution which was revolutionary for consumer based printing products at the time. It was during this time that HP DeskJet Printers would gain their reputation of being one of the first high quality consumers based printing products available to the mass public.

Network printers are commonly used at work places, libraries, schools, houses with large families and homes in general. There are some problems that may happen then seem to be seen time and time again and these include the set up process and being able to enter the network for the computer, communication errors, jams, streaks, blank prints, and more.

Network and My Computer

When you have a network that has more than one computer, it can mean that you have to change some of the default setting s for the computer you first set up the printer with. This is because that computer may feel that it is the primary computer and that could mean that it would be the only one able to print from the computer and that it would not allow other computers to be able to do so as well.

Communication Error

If you have a communication error come up on your computer it can be a moment when you suddenly are very annoyed. First, you have to get it working and are able to then eventually you have a communication error and think you may have to do it all over again. You may not have to do that again as long as you simply do a power cycle, then disconnect, and reconnect to the network.

Jams

You know that the problem that you have is a printer paper jam if you het the error announcing it, you put paper in and it does not come out the other side or if when you go to print it simply eats you paper. The way that you normally have to fix this is by carefully taking the paper out of the area that it is jammed inside of. This can mean opening the printer, but many times this is not needed because of easy access slots that are put in place for if there is ever a jam.

Streak and Blank Prints

When you have a streak that shows up and it is either lighter then the effect you where looking for or darker then you may have a problem with the way something is edited no your computer or you may have ink on the rollers. There is also a possibility that this could mean that you are running low on ink so you may also want to do an ink test to be able to make sure that this is not the case. When you end up with a blank print that normally does mean that you are out of ink or that the ink that you have inside of the printer dried or is having another issue such as clogging.

Many individuals appear to prefer inkjet printers to other printers due to their cost not only of the main inkjet printer but also of the replacement inkjet cartridges, which are typically much cheaper than other models. This makes the inkjet printer an excellent choice for business, which are just beginning, or individuals who wish to have a printer but not have to spend a high amount of money for a higher quality printer. This makes the inkjet printer a high demand model that many companies have produced a working model in order to have theirs on the market to sell to the population.

Longevity

It has been reported by consumers that the single thing they face most with inkjet problems is the issue of longevity. Due to how popular they are, and how cheap they are both in cost and to manufacture, many companies do not bother to make them to last. This can give an inkjet a lifespan of only a few years and although it is far less likely to have problems with individual parts, it means you will have to replace your entire printer rather than only a part. As the cost of the inkjet printer is less than others, in most cases you will still be paying less to buy a new.

Poor Quality

Another dilemma that inkjet printers face is how the quality of the printed product is far less than other printers. A laser printer is more detailed and less likely to smudge whereas inkjet printers are not only frequently smudging, but is more likely to ruin entire printed documents. Although at times these smudges can be fixed if you clean the print head, this is not always the case, which might require replacing the cartridge or even the entire printer. If you have the original software installed, the printer heads might also be misaligned which will require you to go into your software and realign it through the program.

Communication

Some inkjet printers also have difficulty communicating with computers, especially if the inkjet printer is a cheaper model where it was sold very a low cost from a manufacturer that is not well known. If this occurs, you might be able to reset the printer by turning the power off and running through a print cycle, which should fix the problem. If not you may also have to reset your computer and if this does not work, either reinstall the driver software or purchase a new printer. As the costs of other printers are coming down it might be best to go with another type of printer if you are continuing to have problems, even a good time to consider getting a wireless printer

It can cost you a great amount of money for you to continue purchasing replacement HP ink cartridges every time that you run out of ink. This expense can be even greater for those who print out digital photos on a regular basis. The solution to this problem is to exercise some basic ink saving tips and tricks that work to increase your ink economy. Here are 5 ways to make your HP ink last longer!

1. Only Print When Absolutely Necessary

Before sending a document to the printer, you should take a look at the reason behind the document that is being printed. Do you actually need to print that out, in other words? If the document is one that you only plan on referencing a single time, it may be easier to leave it on your computer. If you are printing out a confirmation code for a reservation or a recipe for a special occasion, consider writing the information out on paper rather than printing it out and wasting your HP inks. These cases are examples of when you can instead jot a hand note and save the ink for more important uses.

2. Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Avoid temperatures that are too extreme, as a large variation of temperature will affect the performance of your ink cartridges. If you want to conserve your ink, make sure that your printer is kept in moderate temperatures at all times.

3. Only Use Colour Printing When You Have To

Turn on the colour printing only when you actually need it. Colour ink can cost two to three times as much as black ink can. Couple this with the fact that most printers will use all three colours to print anything that isn’t considered to be perfect black (especially when it comes to diagrams, figures and photos), and it should become relatively clear that when you need black and white printouts, you should turn off colour printing and rely on black ink alone.

4. Choose a Print Quality Suitable for What You’re Printing

Going back to tip 1, if you are going to print out a document, then you should choose a quality suited for the purpose of the document in question. The draft printer setting is the best printing setting for you to use for all non-presentation quality documents.

5. Keep the Printer Ink from Drying Out

Printers that are in regular use have less of a chance of ink drying up as those used only once in a while. If you will only use the printer irregularly, you should strive to print the test page or a small body of text with three colour squares every once in a while as part of your ongoing printer maintenance in order to get the best printing performance over time.

Printers, as with most computer peripherals, have gone wireless. These days, setting up a printer sharing network is vastly simplified thanks to robust wireless technology and the built-in capabilities of modern operating systems. Here are the three best wireless printers as ranked by customers in the UK and North America.

1. Samsung CLP-315W Colour Wireless Laser Printer

Those who need light-duty colour copier capabilities along with laser-quality monochrome printing need look no further than the Samsung CLP-315W. This reasonably-priced colour laser printer is less expensive than some of the older, monochrome-only laser printers offered by other manufacturers, and it matches up feature-by-feature with printers that are twice its price. Furthermore, CLP-315W toner produces high quality photo and text documents as well as being extremely reliable, long lasting and relatively cheap to purchase.

For those who need an entry-level colour laser printer that is ready to be the centrepiece of a wireless network, look no further than the Samsung CLP-315W.

2. Lexmark X9350 Wireless InkJet Multi-function Printer

Businesses that prefer inkjet technology to fill their printing needs will do well to use the Lexmark X9350. A true multi-function printer, it offers colour copying or scanning, full-featured fax capability, rapid monochrome printing up to 32ppm, 4-colour printing and optional 6-colour print capability, all with wireless networking that make it a snap to set up and use in a busy home network or small business. The Lexmark X9350’s running costs are low, Lexmark X9350 ink has great performance along with fantastic yield, which means fewer replacements. When accurate colour reproduction is essential, this is the printer to choose.

3. Brother MFC-7840-w Monochrome Wireless Laser Printer

This 23ppm monochrome laser printer is reasonably priced, highly rated, and ships with all the bells and whistles needed in today’s busy home office or small business. With its sleek black case, it would look right at home in Darth Vader’s office, but the high-contrast buttons and ergonomic design make it a breeze to set up and use. For wireless monochrome printing, this printer from Brother is the one to choose.

The MFC-7840-w, along with Brother printers in general, get good marks for Linux compatibility. Those who run Linux rather than Windows or Mac OS X know that it can be difficult or impossible to find peripherals that are fully compatible with their systems. Brother printers ship with Linux drivers, making it the choice for Linux users worldwide.

Summary

Wireless printers are here to stay. With the ease of use and reliability of today’s wireless technology, there is no going back to the days of wired networking and dedicated “network specialists”. The three top-rated and reasonably priced wireless printers – the Brother MFC-7840-W, Samsung CLP-315W, and Lexmark X9350 – offer diverse solutions for today’s small business needs.
